Roman Villa: GPR Time-Slice and Archaeological Interpretation

Wie schon in den Jahren zuvor beteiligen wir uns auch 2011 an dieser internationalen Tagung. Wir freuen uns auf ein spannendes Tagungsprogramm und auf zahlreiche Gespräche mit Geophysikern und Archäologen.

Am Mittwoch den 21. September um 16:30 werden wir in einem Kurzvortrag unser Poster zu den geophysikalischen Untersuchungen römischer Villen im Salzburger Umland vorstellen:

Norbert Buthmann, Benno Zickgraf, Geophysics of ancient architecture. Examples of archaeological interpretation from Salzburg.

Abstract: The combined analysis of the documentation from the pioneering days of archeology (19th century) with the results of modern geophysical prospecting provides a considerable scientific value. It can now be answered key questions regarding the structure, expansion and maintenance of several roman villas. So far, seven locations of Roman villas in the Salzburg region have been investigated by geophysical prospecting. The interpreted results are the basis for further analysis on individual archaeological sites and for the study of rural settlement in the Salzburg area. The basis for all further steps is the integrated archaeological interpretation of geophysical data.

The Project is under the direction of Dr. R. Kastler (Salzburg Museum, Austria). Analysis of the excavations of the 19th century by A. Werner (Master-thesis at the University of Salzburg, Austria). Geophysical survey by Posselt & Zickgraf Prospektionen GbR (Marburg, Germany).
